I spent less that 48 hours in New York City this past week, but I realized the meaning of this quote only a moment after stepping off the Penn Station escalator that brought me above ground in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Unless you wander all the way to the water that surrounds this island, there is no such thing as a “horizon.” Every inch of skyline is dotted with glass, stone, and steel. That one tree you see in the lower right foreground was a strange sight – it seemed as lost amidst the jungle of skyscrapers as I was.

I’ve hiked in national parks before, but this one is more to my liking: I wore cute shoes instead of thick-soled boots, and good cappuccino was available on every street corner. Thank you, New York!
